Although fall is my very favorite time of the year, It has been pretty nippy in my neck of the woods these days. The temps at night have been getting down to freezing. I had every intention of taking some of my plants out of the planters outside and bringing them in but the night before I planned on doing that it got really cold… most of them died.
The cooler weather made a difference in how we eat. Instead of going out for dinner most nights, I have started cooking good, full meals again. Today I made chicken soup… my fabulous chicken soup! It turned out pretty awesome, if I do say so myself.
I’ve also begun being “crafty” again. Between this and last weekend I made a fleece blanket and finished a quilt top that was started last winter. I have plans on making at least four more fleece blankets to give as Christmas gifts and finishing the unfinished quilts I have been neglecting.
Oh, and then there is the peach jam. I have never made any kind of jelly or jam before and always wanted to learn how. The recipe I found if fairly easy. I made three batches and from what I’ve been told, it tastes pretty darn good!! I haven’t tried it myself yet… I always make a couple people be my “guinea pig” when I try something new. I actually really enjoyed making the jam and think I may do more of that in the future!

This bunny was not shy. He ventured out and was eating grass while we were playing mini-golf nearby.

This is Ginger, an English Bulldog I saw when we stopped at a roadside park in Alaska last year.

It’s hard to believe but the end of summer is coming… quickly. Even more harder to believe, I have not yet had or even been to a bonfire yet this summer!!
I was suppose to go to one at Tami & Lloyd’s last weekend but plans changed and they ended up not having it. And then they were going to have one tonight. Plans changed again… it is way too windy this evening and, with the lack of any significant rainfall, it is way too dry.
One of these days real soon it’s gotta happen. It just wouldn’t be right not to have at least one bonfire this summer!

- The other morning I was prepping the house for a warm day. I closed all the windows and proceeded to pull the blinds. As I was pulling the string on one, it decided it would come crashing down! The end of the blind hit me on the inside of the right wrist. As soon as I felt the pain I looked and saw some blood.. there wasn’t a lot but the when I saw where the cut was, it scared me. A small cut was right across where the vein is! The first thing that popped into my head was OMG! Thank goodness the blind wasn’t bigger or heavier otherwise that would not have been good. The second thing that popped into was a flashback to several years ago when a blind fell down and hit my sister in the foot… she ended up getting several stitches!
- It’s been a few weeks since work began in front of building for a new parking lot. Not long after, all employees had to start parking in the front (even though it is not paved yet) so that the back parking lot could be started. There isn’t a lot of room out front when all the employees and visitors are there so getting out at lunchtime can sometimes be tricky. As I was leaving for lunch yesterday, my co-worker and I got into our vehicles at the same time. I waited for her to back out and as she pulled away I noticed a school employee get into her car, she was parked almost directly behind me. I start backing out and saw in my mirror the school employee throw her car into reverse and start backing up (there was a vehicle parked in front of her). She didn’t look and didn’t stop and I laid on my horn to prevent her from backing into the back end of LittleBug. She stopped… just in time. I think someone needs to pay attention to her driving and lunchtime traffic instead of watching workers replacing a window on the building!!!

Yesterday morning when I woke up and went downstairs, it seemed really warm. It not only seemed really warm… it was! The thermostat said it was 79 degrees in the house. I opened up both front and back doors to get a little circulation going and almost immediately realized that wasn’t going to work because it was already really warm outside. Hmmm, guess I’ll just keep everything closed up and turn on all the fans.
All day long it kept getting warmer in the house and even warmer outside. It was one of those kind of days where you just want to sit in front of coolness and drink water. In fact, I did drink water… all afternoon and part of the evening. So unlike me, I’m usually a pop and coffee all day kind of person.
Anyways, we don’t have an air conditioner for the house since we don’t usually get a lot of really hot summer days and we probably wouldn’t use it that often. BUT I decided today I am going to go buy one this evening because it going to be another hot day. I don’t care if we wouldn’t use it that often… coolness in the dog days of summer is much better than sweating like a pig when trying to do something productive around the house!
And while I’m on the subject of hot, we need some rain… badly, like a whole day or two of rain. The grass in our yard is really brown and as I told my husband, “When you walk on the grass it feels crunchy because it is so dried out!”

I saw this plant while visiting the Dole Plantation in Hawaii last fall. I’m not sure what type of plant it is but I thought it looked interesting.

I was recently watching Food Network and caught part of the Pillsbury Bake Off. One recipe that caught my attention was the Loaded Baked Potato Pizza. We bought all the ingredients and my husband made it one evening. I thought it was very good but if it were up to me, I would have put more cheese on it. (I’m a cheese fiend.)

INGREDIENTS
1 can (13.8 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated classic pizza crust
1 medium white potato
1 tablespoon CRISCO® Pure Olive Oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 box (10 oz) Green Giant® frozen broccoli & cheese sauce
2/3 cup sour cream (we used sour cream with chives)
1 tablespoon ranch dressing
1 cup shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese blend (4 oz)
5 slices cooked bacon, coarsely chopped
1 small tomato, seeded, chopped (1/2 cup)
2 medium green onions, chopped (2 tablespoons)
DIRECTIONS
Heat oven to 375°F. Spray large cookie sheet with CRISCO® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray. Unroll pizza crust dough on cookie sheet; press dough into 13×9-inch rectangle. Bake 10 to 13 minutes or until crust is light golden brown. Remove from oven; set aside.
Meanwhile, pierce potato with fork; place on microwavable paper towel in microwave oven. Microwave 4 to 5 minutes, turning once, until tender. Cover; let stand 5 minutes. When potato is cool enough to handle, peel potato and cut into 1/4-inch cubes (1 cup). In small bowl, mix potato, oil, salt and pepper; set aside.
Cook broccoli in microwave as directed on box. Empty from pouch into another small bowl to cool slightly; set aside.
In another small bowl, mix sour cream and ranch dressing. Spread mixture over pizza crust to within 1/2 inch of edges of crust. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the cheese evenly over sour cream mixture. Sprinkle with bacon.
Spread broccoli mixture and potato mixture evenly over bacon. Sprinkle tomato, onions and remaining 1/2 cup cheese evenly over potato mixture.
Bake 15 to 22 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown and cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting.

| Thirteen Things about the U.P. State Fair
1. I only go to the Fair for the food.
2. My husband and I use to submit photos into the photo exhibit each year. Although we have won ribbons in the past, we haven’t submitted photos for the past two years because they don’t follow their own rules.
3. I love checking out the Arts & Crafts exhibits, especially the quilts. It makes me wish I could make awesome quilts like that!
4. My favorite midway game use to be where you place a quarter on a color. If it lands on your color, you win a prize. Now you have to win more than once to win a prize. It is no longer my favorite game.
5. While checking out the penned animals yesterday, we saw a kangaroo who looked like he didn’t have a care in the world, a tortoise trying to escape and a horny goat. The goat kept trying to hump one and head-banged the other goats that got close!
6. I usually run into my ex-boyfriend at the Fair every year. I haven’t this year… yet. Don’t think my husband appreciated the last time I ran into him there and he gave me a big hug. :-/
7. My favorite fair foods - funnel cake, ice cream wedges (we call them wedgies), chinese food combination platter (eggroll, tempura and teriyaki chicken on a stick) and kettle corn.
8. My favorite ride is the tilt-a-whirl and my husband’s is the ferris wheel. We don’t go on either cuz he doesn’t like spinning rides and I don’t like rides that go high in the sky.
9. The Headline Entertainment this year is Tracy Lawrence, Craig Morgan, Finger Eleven and a Demolition Derby (w00t!). I won’t be going to any of them… country music and demolition derbies are not my thing and I’ve never even heard of Finger Eleven.
10. My husband always gets a pass for parking which means he gets a spot in prime parking. This year he didn’t (I was shocked!) so we had to pack in the back forty and actually walk!! We opted to catch the people mover… a big wagon-type thing pulled by a tractor.
11. The people mover was pretty stinky and moved really slow. We could have walked faster!
12. After only 2.5 hours at the Fair yesterday, I wondered how in the world we walked around that place all day long when the kids were little. Must be getting old. (Huh? Who me? I’m not OLD!)
13. I need to go back to the Fair… was too full from other food and didn’t have room for a funnel cake.
